Organization of the Second Year of the Follow-up Master’s Study
On this page, you will find the obligations of all students in the second year of the follow-up master’s studies, including information about the submission of diploma theses and the state final exams. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the international office, Petra Stolin or Jana Vlach, the student advisors Katka Měrtlová (katka.mertlova@tul.cz) or Lucie Mlejnková (lucie.mlejnkova@tul.cz), or the vice dean for studies, Ing. Eva Šírová, Ph.D.
BEFORE STUDIES:
- Enrollment - At the beginning of September, you must enrol via IS STAG for the following year of your studies (My studies > Study progress > Study results). Before enrollment, you should check the correctness of the registration sheets A and B and confirm it. After the confirmation, the Registration(Enrollment) button becomes available.
– If the student does not enrol into the following year of study, their study will be terminated.
- Pre-registration of courses - It is the duty of every student to register for courses according to their study plan. Unlike the first year, you must enrol in courses for both semesters.
– Registration of first-year courses due to their repetition is possible later – the first-year students have priority to register for these courses.
- Study plans on FE TUL are there.
STUDENT DUTIES:
- Specification of the Thesis Topic – During September, but no later than by the deadline set by the thesis supervisor, the student will create a specific thesis assignment in IS STAG (Thesis Topics) after consultation with the thesis supervisor.
- The student enters into IS STAG:
- Title of the topic (only in English) - the specific title of the thesis can differ from the framework topic. It should be uploaded to STAG during the final upload of information about the DT.
- The principles for elaboration (in the form of a numbered list) must follow the DT’s title and correspond with the issue solved by the student in the DT.
- A list of recommended recent literature (in the form of a bulleted list, not older than 10 years, at least 1-2 foreign sources). The list must meet the requirements of ČSN ISO 690:2022; the details are specified in Annex A of Directive No. 1/2019.
- Under the bibliography list, after two empty lines, the name of the consultant and his/her job position will be listed, but only for professionally oriented study programs. In the academic year 2024/25, it only applies to Information Management.
- The student selects “Thesis supplementary document completed by the student” and clicks “Save”.
- The supervisor will check the data entered by the student in IS STAG and, if necessary, ask the student for correction. After the final revision, the supervisor selects “Thesis supplementary document approved by the teacher” and clicks “Save”.
- The study programme guarantor will approve specific assignments in IS STAG by 8 October.
- Subsequently, the assignment will be approved in IS STAG by the dean of FE TUL by 31 October.
- In case of disapproval by the dean or the study programme guarantor, the assignment is returned to the student for editing.
- After approval of the assignment by the dean, the administration office of the relevant department will generate the DT assignment in IS STAG. (The administration office will complete the scope of work and the validity of the assignment).
- Responsibility for the correctness of filling out the form and data in IS STAG remains with the student. The assignment is valid for two years.
- Submission of the thesis: The student must submit the thesis before the state exams under the deadlines for thesis submission specified by the Calendar of Academic Year. It is usually one month before the defence because the thesis must be handed over to the external opponent, who will evaluate it.
- Before submission of the diploma thesis, follow these instructions (check-list):
- We recommend ordering printing on the cover of the diploma thesis well in advance (even two months before the planned submission of the thesis). They will help you in Polygrafia TUL – Printing services (located in the basement of building H, entrance from the other side of the building, from the parking lot). The binding of your masterpiece will then be a matter of a few minutes.
- Before submitting the final thesis to the supervisor, the student generates the introductory pages of the thesis from IS STAG. You can find them in IS STAG in the menu “My studies” => “Final thesis” => “Add information about the diploma thesis.” => “Printing title pages and entering the final thesis. PDF format”.
- The system will generate in one PDF: the title page of the thesis, two pages of the thesis assignment and a declaration page under which there is the name of the thesis author and the current date.
- Before the (first) submission of the electronic version of the final thesis, the student has to confirm the declaration of authorship in IS STAG
- Without confirming this statement, IS STAG will not let you continue and submit the electronic version of your final thesis. This step ensures that the student “signed” the statement, the time stamp and other details of when they did so are stored, and there is no need to submit a paper original of this statement.
- Convert the text of your thesis to PDF format. Prepare the PDF files with the title page of your thesis and merge all these files into one PDF file, e.g. on the pdfMerge website, in the following order:
- title page in the English language,
- thesis assignment,
- annotation and keywords in Czech (optional),
- annotation and keywords in English,
- thesis content,
- list of figures, list of tables,
- list of abbreviations, signs and symbols used,
- text of the thesis,
- a list of literature,
- eventually, a list of appendices and appendices to the thesis.
- Insert the final PDF file into IS STAG (My studies – Final thesis – Add information about diploma thesis). Complete the basic information about your diploma:
- title in English,
- annotation,
- keywords,
- freely embedded attachments,
- scope of work,
- language of work.
- Print the form with diploma thesis data from IS STAG (My studies – Qualification thesis – Add diploma thesis data – Print final thesis data. PDF format.) and sign it.
- Print the thesis in one copy and have it bound. The thesis is printed on both sides of the paper. Only the title page and the statement (or acknowledgements) will be printed on a one-sided page. Printing and the binding of your diploma thesis can be ordered at TUL Polygraphia – Printing services.
- Insert the unbound, signed form with the thesis data into the diploma thesis (point VII.)
- Submit a single copy of the thesis to your DT supervisor or the secretary of the relevant department.
- After successfully defending the diploma thesis, the student can keep the hard copy of the DT.
- The theses are always made publicly accessible! They cannot be kept secret!
- Minimum of 35 credits for academic year – Each student (even in following years) is required to obtain a minimum of 35 credits in each academic year of their studies. The deadline for fulfilling this condition is the end of the summer semester’s examination period or the academic year’s end (specified in the Calendar of Academic Year).
THE FINAL STATE EXAMINATION
Specific deadlines can be found in the Calendar of Academic Year.
BEFORE THE STATE EXAM:
- Registration for the Final State Examination (SZPP) – The student must register for the state exam in IS STAG (in the same way as for a regular exam).
- The dean announces the specific dates of the state exams.
- State Exam Commissions – The state exam commissions are formed after the deadline for registration. Then, the schedules are published on the faculty website.
- Course of Study form – A student must submit the Course of Study form to the study department. The document can be downloaded from IS STAG (My studies → Course of Study).
- Specific dates are in the Calendar of Academic Year.
- The signed form can be sent to the study department by ordinary post or dropped in the mailbox (at the door of the study office).
- Presentation of the DT defence – A student must send their presentation for the diploma thesis defence to the committee secretary at least one day before the state exam.
- The presentation must be sent in .PPT(X) or PDF format.
- It should have approximately 10 pages.
ON THE DAY OF THE STATE EXAM:
- Students must come in dressed appropriately with a valid student ID (or any other form of identification).
- They must be present at Building H at least 40 minutes before the start of their exam slot. Sometimes, it can happen that one of the examinees does not show up, or the exam does not last the full 20 minutes. In such cases, the exam schedule can be shifted.
- Course of the State Examination – The secretary summons the student in front of the State Commission (who are usually PhD students).
- The student identifies themself to the secretary with a valid ID (ISIC, passport, etc.).
- The exam part of the examination is divided into two 20-minute parts – the first part is the defence of the diploma thesis, and the second part is an expert debate.
- The student has 20 minutes to defend the thesis.
- However, the presentation should not exceed 7 minutes.
- After the presentation, the committee asks questions (related to the thesis).
- After the defence, there is an expert debate that lasts another 20 minutes.
- During the expert debate, the committee can ask questions that stem both from the Topics of the Final State Exam (downloadable in bottom of this page), or are related to the diploma thesis topic.
- Final State Examination results – The head committee decides on the method of announcing the results.
- Immediately after the exam: After the defence and debate, a student is asked to go out momentarily, and the commission agrees on the grades. Then, the committee announces the results to each student individually.
- Collectively after the morning/afternoon session: Students are called back before the committee to hear the result together with other students after completing the entire session.
- Successful graduates - After a successful Final State Examination, the student becomes a graduate (formally, you have no more a student statute!).
- Students who successfully graduate must officially terminate their studies at the Study Office. Students should make an appointment (ask by email) at the study office to pick up a certificate of completion.
- Graduation ceremony – Graduates who plan to participate in the Graduation Ceremony must pay a graduation fee of CZK 300 – at the study office, in cash (including a scarf and the admission of up to five family members).
- Graduates are supposed to be in front of the auditorium of building G an hour before the start of graduation, next to the dressing room on the 3rd floor of the building. Formal attire is required.
- Dates of the Graduation Ceremony are announced in advance on the faculty website.
MISCELLANEOUS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
- At the beginning of each semester, an information meeting is held for each study year, where the vice-dean for study affairs, together with the student’s advisor (and possibly also the study guarantor), will visit the students in one of the joint lectures and introduce them to all the responsibilities that await them in the given semester.
- During each exam period, a Teaching Quality Assessment is conducted via IS STAG. Here, the student can comment on the happenings at the faculty, and/or their registered and completed courses. Evaluations can be expressed anonymously. Feedback is very important to the faculty; therefore, we ask all students to consider completing the quality report.
